Massage for neck and shoulder tension in San Francisco

Last updated October 17, 2026

I come to you. This page is for the neck that won't turn, and the shoulders that live up by your ears. I don't diagnose headaches, and I don't claim to cure them.

Session pricing

90 or 120 minutes

Sessions more than 15 miles away may include a travel fee. I'll let you know before you book.

What it usually feels like

The tightness people describe

People tell me the upper traps feel like ropes. The neck won't turn all the way toward one shoulder. A headache starts at the base of the skull and climbs. By noon the shoulders are up by the ears, and sometimes the jaw is tired too.

See a doctor first if this started with a fall or a car accident, if a headache is sudden and severe, if an arm feels numb or weak, or if you have chest pain.

In the session

What I do

We start with a short check-in. I want to know what you do with your hands all day, and whether the headache has a side.

Then I work. Deep tissue on the upper traps and levator scapulae. Myofascial release when the same line of tissue keeps coming back. The chest and the front of the shoulders get time, because they pull the shoulders forward. At the base of the skull I slow down. Pressure stays lighter there. I stay off anything that feels nerve-like or sharp.

I wrote more in your headache might be living in your shoulders, and in why your jaw is tired by noon.

Afterward

What to expect

Turning your head is often a little easier. The neck can feel longer. The area may be tender that night. Don't crank it through a hard stretch before bed.

If numbness shows up, or the headache changes in a way that worries you, see a doctor.

Between sessions

One thing to practice

A chin tuck is the one I give most often. Sit tall. Draw the chin straight back, like a small double chin, and hold a few seconds. About eight times. It asks the deep neck muscles to help, so the traps don't have to hold your head up alone.

Put the screen closer to eye height. If the laptop stays in your lap, the neck will climb back up by tomorrow. The desk posture page has the rest of that setup.

Questions

Can you fix a stiff neck?

I can work the muscles that usually hold a stiff neck and tight shoulders. I can't tell you why it's stiff, and I don't promise it will be gone. See a doctor after a fall or a car accident, or if an arm feels numb or weak.

What techniques do you use on the neck and shoulders?

Deep tissue on the upper traps and levator scapulae, myofascial release when the same line of tissue keeps coming back, and slower work at the base of the skull. I also work the chest, because it pulls the shoulders forward.

I get headaches from my shoulders. Is that something you see?

Yes. A lot of the headaches people bring me start at the base of the skull or across the tops of the shoulders. I wrote more about that on the blog. A sudden severe headache, or a headache with chest pain, needs a doctor first.

What should I feel afterward?

Turning your head is often a little easier, and the neck can feel longer. The area may be tender that night. Skip a hard stretch until the next day.

What does a session cost?

90 minutes is $180. 120 minutes is $240. Sessions more than 15 miles away may include a travel fee. I'll let you know before you book.

What can I do at my desk after?

Try a chin tuck. Sit tall, draw the chin straight back, hold a few seconds, and do that about eight times. Put the screen closer to eye height so you aren't looking down at a laptop all day.
